We bought our JH motorhome in early 2016 and have lived in it full-time for almost three years while working all over Australia. It's compact, so a minimalist approach is a must, but the go-almost-anywhere ability is well worth it — simple to drive and park, and genuinely comfortable to live in. Going off-road with a JH 4WD motorhome

In March I joined a 10-day Victorian High Country tag-along tour covering some of the most iconic 4x4 tracks in the VHC — Blue Rag Track, Billy Goats Bluff and Crooked River Track, with its 24 river crossings.

I bought a JH motorhome to tackle the roads less travelled, confident it could handle a hugely diverse range of conditions. Mine is fitted with a few add-ons — an ARB front air locker and onboard compressor, plus a Runva 13,000lb winch.

You simply couldn't complete these tracks without the front locker. I'm running BF Goodrich AT KO2s at 20 psi front and 24 rear, and the punishment they shrugged off on the jagged, rocky tracks was incredible. An iDrive throttle controller made a real difference too — it adjusts throttle response and is fully programmable to the conditions.

This kind of 4x4ing isn't for everyone and, like anything, there are risks. But what I can say with total confidence is that this is a very well built, seriously impressive 4x4. I travelled with hardened enthusiasts who were constantly amazed at what 'That Thing' could do. The suspension setup is excellent and its ability to climb is astounding. At 3.1 m it sits in a real sweet spot, and there wasn't a track it couldn't weave through. It came away with only minor underside fibreglass marks and a bent door step after meeting a rock on a creek exit — and the beauty of a fibreglass body is that those scratches buff straight out.

Nothing else compares

We walked the Caravan and Camping Show in Melbourne yesterday and found nothing to compare with, or come close to, the JH motorhome. After seeing the latest model at the factory last week, we'd like to place our order now.

Very, very happy with ours

We're certainly very, very happy with ours and have made several trips around WA since getting home. Our first outing was a 12,000 km drive back across to Perth right after we bought it — fabulous. We zigzagged across outback Queensland, down through the centre around Alice Springs and Uluru, then south through Port Augusta and across the Nullarbor. We travelled off the beaten track at times and the motorhome handled it all beautifully.

The week that was — looking back

In the last week of March, Wilma and I made a hurried trip in our newly handed-over JH motorhome, from the factory in Queensland to our home in northern Tasmania. The round trip unexpectedly took just six days — right as Australia's battle with the virus was unfolding.

We made plans against the strong wishes of our family. The motorhome was finished and we'd been waiting through the build; we didn't want to leave it sitting there indefinitely, and twelve months' registration had already been applied. To keep the peace we agreed we wouldn't go if our early flight to Brisbane was cancelled — it wasn't.

We took delivery on the Tuesday and hit the road Wednesday, the same day borders were threatening to close. We chose the quieter Newell Highway and slipped from Queensland into New South Wales, grabbed the last available spot at a Dubbo caravan park before that chain shut nationwide, then pushed on into Victoria and Melbourne to catch the Spirit of Tasmania we'd booked.

We came off the half-empty ferry early the next morning, were handed a bag of bread, milk and butter, and told to head straight home into isolation. Always staying a day ahead of the closures, it became a memorable trip. Our motorhome behaved exactly as we'd expected, built by a dedicated team with every reason to be proud. Now we're home, we can stop looking back and start looking forward to the road ahead. Happy travelling.

Under-promised and over-delivered

Just a big thank you to the team for delivering such a wonderful motorhome — you've truly under-promised and over-delivered. It was a long wait between ordering at the Brisbane show and taking delivery, and some of the details we'd taken in at ordering had gone a little hazy; we're still noticing and appreciating aspects of the design and build quality. We could not be happier

We've just clocked up twelve months living exclusively in our JH. If someone had told us at purchase that we'd live in it that long, we'd have laughed! In all that time we've never once thought about how it could be better designed, or regretted a single option we chose.

We haven't needed an extra bin on the back or a trailer, which shows how space-efficient it is, and with the solar panels and batteries we've never had to book into a caravan park for power. Thank you for the gracious, efficient after-sales service — we could not be happier, and are glad to share our experience with anyone interested as we travel.

A unique vehicle, and a great team behind it

First, a big thank you to the team for such an enjoyable, satisfying experience investigating and buying our new motorhome. From our first enquiry to a very comprehensive handover, we felt genuinely welcomed and personally considered.

On our 3½-day drive home to Temora we came to appreciate so much about it. The ride quality from the rear tandem-axle setup really smooths out our increasingly stressed roads, though we're yet to try it on the outback dirt that's our real purpose for the vehicle. The Toyota Hilux performs well and is a comfortable drive, even for Lesley, who hasn't driven anything this size in a while.

The real benefit is inside — a workable, roomy kitchen and dinette (especially with the table half-folded), a very usable bed space and a stair system that's a genuine winner. The bathroom seemed tight at first but really opens up once you're moving in it, and there's storage everywhere. So many thoughtful extras come as standard.

As we neared home it got harder and harder to stick to familiar roads — we were both ready to point it at something untravelled. It's a motorhome that's going to spark a lot of questions and interest, and we're very much looking forward to the adventures ahead. A complete understatement

We were thrilled to take delivery of our new Toyota Hilux 4x4 JH motorhome in March, and couldn't wait to get out and test our new 'baby'. We travelled extensively through Queensland — down to Bourke, then Lightning Ridge, before heading back to discover more of our own state, mostly inland. Our JH just purred wherever we pointed it; uphill and down, it did exactly what we asked. Road performance was remarkable, fuel economy brilliant, and the design and build quality a credit to the whole team.

We covered just over 12,000 km and can't wait for the next trip. This is our third motorhome, and to say we're impressed would be a complete understatement. Thank you for putting the fun back into motorhoming.

The best decision we've made

Sending this from Tasmania, where we're having a fabulous time. Our JH has certainly lived up to and exceeded expectations — we couldn't be happier, and it's definitely the best decision we've made. We've really put it through its paces on roads we'd never have considered in our last motorhome, and it's been a joy to drive and live in.

We've shown it to so many people, and without exception they're amazed at how spacious it feels inside for such a compact exterior — 'more bench space than our much bigger van', genuine surprise at the roomy ensuite and all the drawers. A big thank you — we're very happy campers.

We can park in a normal car park

We bought our JH in November 2013 and found dealing directly with the people who build the vehicle very satisfying. Having something virtually custom-built for you is amazing — so many other companies sell standard vehicles and you end up with something that suits the manufacturer, not you. The minor modifications we asked for were no problem, and the result is perfect for our use. We particularly love being able to park in a normal car park while still having a wonderfully spacious bathroom and living area.

An excellent product

We've just had our 1,000 km service done after a week travelling around the Bundaberg area. Jan and I want you to know how extremely happy we are with our motorhome. Having tested every feature — including the heater, many times over a cold snap — we can only compliment you on an excellent product.
